Hawaii is nothing more than another Peurto Rico, a welfare island state that cries every now and then for independence not that they really want independence (because they know their benefits will get cut) but to EXTORT more benefits from the mainland, I think it is time to call their bluff....
They were a completely defenseless paradise at one of the most strategic locations on the planet. Their independence had a very short lifespan once war ships set sail from anywhere.

I generally agree with that. But since things are heating up Big Time militarily in Asia I think it's wiser to remain in full control of our bases.
It's almost amusing that the Philippines are trying to woo our forces back after basically kicking us out of Subic and Clark AFB -- with a little help from Mt. Pinatubo. Everyone hates our bases and nuclear weapons -- until they think they might need them.
Many of the “Hawaiian” people are of asian descent or from the mainland.
Why would the tea party want to lose an important US military base?
Which came first, the statehood or the ruling that allows CLB ?
If legislation to allow CLB occured before ... or worse .. JUST before statehood, the game's been afoot a whole lot longer than what we know.

They ruled in '55 and became a state in '59 ... one year each before an election.

Actual pure native Hawaiians make up something like less than 10% of the population of the Islands.
If I’m not mistaken several islands are Hawiian only. I might be wrong.
