My biggest linguistic pet peeve as of late is how the youth are using “so...” with a drawn out ‘o’ at the end of sentences as if to elicit a response from others or otherwise just fill the air with vacuous noise.
Hell, I run across dozens of pictures of text messages between teens on sites like Reddit and Imgur, and I literally cannot understand what they’re saying. I’m 33 years old! I’m far from what I would consider “out of the loop,” but these kids are on a completely different, I contend DUMBER, level than the rest of us.
I often have to rely on my wife to translate for me. She’s better at figuring out what they’re attempting to say. Women are better at these linquistic things. :)
I have noticed this too. I believe it is a natural progression from the fact that polite conversation amongst these individuals is a lost concept. Every one of them MUST say what is on their mind immediately. No waiting for a pause in the conversation because there is none. It is as if they simply cannot hold a thought in their head for more than a few seconds and form a complete sentence before speaking. No 'buffer' so to speak. If you pause while speaking...for even two seconds...you get interrupted.
Sooooo...they fill the vacuum with whatever vocal noise they can.
Simple, polite, CONversation is becoming a lost art. It has evolved...or devolved...into a room fool of ravens creating cacophony.
I literally cannot understand what theyre saying

That may be partly due to your inability to follow inconsequntial topics and endless small talk. They’re on a totally different cognitive plane than you are. lol
Today’s youth mostly live in a very small and insular world of their own making. Its as though they’ve tuned out reality.

Well, what about professors and other members of the “intellectual class” who start every paragraph with a “So” ? Even some right-wing pundits are infected with this disgusting habit!
