My wife has Idiopathic Thrombocytopenia. Had no idea cats got it! She was bruising at the drop of a hat. After multiple attempts with different meds she finally had her spleen removed in 2001. She’s not had a problem with it since. The primary medication when first diagnosed was prednisone. It boosted her platelet count quickly and was very inexpensive. It does have some bad side effects such as bone loss-swelling-insomnia. Is some type of steroid treatment available for cats??

Yes. My daughter's cat actually had a prednisone Rx filled at our people pharmacy (vet didn't carry it) when she was sick. Later learned she had hyperthyroid and later breast cancer. Many pet meds are same as people meds, just under different names. Did a lot of research when said cat was going through her hyperthyroid & two bouts of fatty liver disease. She survived them all, but not the breast cancer.

I was diagnosed with Thrombocytopenia. My platelet counts were chronically below normal. I always bruised easily as a child and as an adult. I was told not to ingest aspirin, which affects the production of platelets. And when I did so, my platelet count went up to normal range. But, of course, the only thing I used in the past for pain was Excedrin, which contains aspirin that apparently works very well for my pain in any form. Now I can only take Aceniphenomin/Tylenol. Other prescribed pain killers that don't contain aspirin either knock me out to almost unconsciousness, don't work, or they make me ill. So it's a painful world for me until a pain specialist can come up with a drug that works for me.
