With only a second left on the clock, Chris Davis caught a 57-yard field-goal attempt that fell short, got up the left side and returned it 100 yards to give the No. 4 Tigers a 34-28 win over No. 1 Alabama and the SEC West title.
Now, Auburn (11-1, 7-1 SEC) has a shot at the SEC title and possibly a national championship all left on the table.
For the second straight game, the clock was running down, and the Tigers had little time left.
That's when Nick Marshall came up with another play.
After a drive spent handing the ball off over and over again, Marshall kept the ball on the zone read, then pulled up short and floated a pass to a wide-open Sammie Coates, who raced in with a 39-yard touchdown to tie the game.
Badly needing some momentum to erase a 21-7 deficit, Auburn went back to the running game that has carried the Tigers all season.
Held without a rushing yard for most of the second quarter, Auburn ripped off a 7-play, 81-yard drive near the end of the first half, punctuated by a 40-yard burst from Mason up the middle to set up his own 2-yard score.
And then, given the ball to start the second half, Auburn kept the momentum going, alternating Marshall and Mason on a nine-play, 69-yard drive that Marshall capped by firing a 13-yard strike to C.J. Uzomah in the corner of the end zone to tie the game at 21.
But after AJ McCarron's 99-yard strike to Amari Toomer, the Tigers had trouble getting going offensively, and the defense came up big with two stops, a fourth-down stand by Carl Lawson and a blocked field goal by Robenson Therezie that set up Auburn's final drive to set up a trip to Atlanta
The thing is, I thought clearly time had run out....and I was thinking is Bama made the FG, Auburn would have a legitimate gripe.
Saban really wanted that last second on the clock. I said he’d better let it run out and go into overtime. I was thinking a pass could be intercepted. The player said “Coach Z” told him to be in the end zone in case there was a fake and Alabama passed the ball. He also told the kid he might be able to run it out if it’s short. He called it. And so did the Auburn radio play by play announcer. He said “If it’s short Auburn can run it out.”
He had a "Muschamp Moment."
Low Tide...
:>)
Go Buckeyes!
A rookie kicker and too much distance left.a.lot of open green space. Kind of a.Crimson meltdown of mistakes in less.than one second.
And the fact that Alabama’s kicking team has a bunch of big hogs who had no chance of catching a sprinter in the open field. One of the worst decisions a head coach could ever make.
If Auburn loses in the SEC title game and Michigan State beats Ohio State look for Alabama to play Florida State for the national title. Auburn’d last two wins have been miracles. Either SC or Missouri have the horses to beat them.
Boneheaded plays from Alabama cost them the game today. Look at the stats. Their offense was great. I said last week when Auburn won on that fluke tipped pass it was the luckiest play in the world. Today’s ending tops that. So can Alabama play for the title again. Damn right. If Auburn loses and Ohio States loses next week. And that is a real possibility.
Ohio State now playing for the national title?? cripes....
I don’t mind a guy kicking a field goal to win a game. What’s dumb is not having the capacity to defend a return ON THE FIELD!
That’s what should be embarrassing as heck to him.
I think also too there was a fight between an AL player and an Auburn player which hurt AL also.
I agree, I think time had expired before the Bama player touched down out of bounds.
LOL Tide!
Those Aurburn fans never gave up.
They sure stayed loud all through the game.
Wish my Vols were in these two teams calibre.lol
The best rushing attack in the nation...
While watching this game, I was thinking back many years to the so called “Punt, ‘Bama, Punt,” game. I believe Bear Bryant had two punts blocked and Auburn won that game, too. “Kick a Field Goal, Saban,” today was even better than that classic game many years ago.
That was incredible! Congratulations to Auburn! I hate it for my Crimson Tide, but we lost our cool and discipline, and Auburn came up with the plays to win. That was a fun game to watch.
Yeah, something stinks.
For sure that comedy of errors will be in the next edition of College Football coaching for dummies.
Has anyone seen a replay on that run back that shows if the ball carrier stayed inbounds the whole way?
I think Saban saw that in OT, Auburn had the advantage because of Bama’s atrocious FG kicker.
