Maybe it is because of my self-induction Sci-Fi snobbery acquired over sixty some odd years, but while I enjoyed both The Fifth Element and Mars Attacks, IMHO they were more screwball comedies than Sci-Fi.

But who am I to say what is what? Sci-Fi, like beauty... is in the eye of the beholder--

In general I agree with you. It took me quite awhile to appreciate British style sci fi which tends to be a bit (or a lot) screwball. But I do like some of it. I do really love those two movies though.
