Why do you (and another poster) think Cloverfield is so bad?

You couldn't tell what was going on half the time and I never could connect nor care about any of the characters. In fact they were so bad I wonder if by killing them the monster wasn't doing us all a favor.

Lastly the complete and utter stupidity of the fact that no modern weapons could stop the monster. What did the law of physics suddenly change? What creature could shake off multiple hits with weapons that can do this to steel and concrete?
