To: US Navy Vet
In school (Eastern Time Zone)...8th Grade...Catholic School.The principal came on the PA and announced that “something terrible had happened” but couldn't give any details.I,at that age,was somewhat aware of world events (my Dad always watched Huntley Brinkley and I often watched too) and,as a result,the first thing that came to my mind was that we were about to be attacked by the Russians.It seems that other kids did too because whenever we'd hear a plane pass over we'd all look around as if we were expecting to be blown up within a few seconds.

I don't miss that part of the cold war. Living in the flight path of a SAC base was nerve wracking for a child.
