Never use milk jugs to store water. As I’ve heard.

I store water in them after a thorough bleach cleansing for my pets. Potable water is stored otherwise. In doing so, I rotate the jugs every eight months as they do have a mandated life span. I haven't had one leak yet or killed any pets. I keep around seventy five gallons this way.

Drain your toilet tank and give it a good wipe down with bleach once a year. That’s four to five gallons of drinkable water. Also drain your water heater every year. That’s forty to sixty gallons of drinkable water.

We have 3 kinds of water stored. Large kitty litter jugs filled with tap water for toilet flushing, clear plastic water jugs filled with tap water and a few drops of bleach for washing up, teeth brushing, etc, and commercial bottled water for drinking.
