Does anybody know the rationale to have an exclusive tire (Goodyear) and an exclusive fuel (Sunoco) in NASCAR but not an exclusive oil? Has it always been this way?

To keep things equal as possible & who ponies up the $$$

Way too many oil choices out there, plus they give the oil to the Teams. Fuel & Tyres are purchased by the Teams.

No, the early days they would use the same tyre one could buy at Sears or whoever in the Drivers mind had the best (longest lasting) tyre. Not uncommon for 40,000 mile tyres to be purchased on a Friday, raced all weekend and taken back to the store for warranty replacement because they were worn out.

That lasted till the stores figured out what was going on.

They would run the same set all race weekend. There were cases when Teams would go to the parking lot if needed and get tyres of a parked car/truck.

They also tended to use truck tyres over car because of more plies (6 or 8 vs 4) and they were Biased not Radial.

Do you ever see them changing the oil during pit stops they way they change tires and gasoline?

Not allowed per rules. No changes of or adding oil during race.

Years ago Dale Sr. broke a camshaft early in the race (IIRC it was Atlanta Spring Race). The 3 Team pulled the motor, changed the camshaft, cleaned out the broken shards in the block, strained the oil through cheesecloth, put every thing back together, changed the oil filter and poured the strained oil back in and finished the Race.

With the Dry Sump system they can have enough oil to do something like that.

Wow awesome explosion on Menards RR.

UPDATE: Team owner Richard Childress said Monday that his team was still uncertain what caused a pit-road explosion that blasted the #27 Chevy driven by Team owner Richard Childress said Monday that his team was still uncertain what caused a pit-road explosion that blasted the #27 Chevy driven by Paul Menard in the late stages of Sunday's NASCAR Sprint Cup Series finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway. Childress, involved in the sport either as a driver or team owner for decades, remarked he'd never seen anything like it. "No, never have," Childress said Monday at a luncheon before the awards ceremony for NASCAR's Nationwide Series and Camping World Truck Series. "I've seen tires blow out before sitting right there on pit road, but nothing that turned into a fiery explosion. And we don't have the answer to it yet, so it's really hard for me to comment on what happened." Childress said his team would investigate the incident back at its Welcome, N.C., race shop and report its findings to NASCAR's research and development department. "It caught on fire on the race track and built a lot of heat, tremendous amount of heat -- about like holding a blow torch on it with the wind blowing under the car and everything," Childress said Monday. "It blew the whole hub, brake rotor, everything off of it. It didn't blow a tire, and that's why we've got to find out why it blew everything off the car." Childress said the impact raised the hood and blew out the car's floorboard. While the damage to the car was severe, Childress said he was thankful that Menard, his crew and nearby NASCAR officials were uninjured.(NASCAR.com)(11-19-2013)

Based on this info I'm going to say that combined with normal axle heat the fire superheated the read end oil and vapors from the oil exploded the axle at the weakest point.

Pure speculation but we shall see.

The tires are filled with inert nitrogen.
So your theory on the rear axle may be correct.
Although there’s a pretty good size vent breather on the axle housing that (should) prevent pressure buildup.
Thankfully nobody got maimed.

I thought about that but was unsure of location and size of vent. Do You know if it is on the axle or part of the tank inside the car?

I know they run a pump off the driveshaft and run the axle oil through a cooler and back to axle.

That may put the system vent elsewhere and actually vented outside the car to atmosphere.

I’m sure the axle is vented outside the compartment, because nothing smells worse than hot diff lube with the sulfur and chlorine.

Trust Me You don't even want to be in the same zipcode!

Was just looking around on the net and have found no specs or diagrams yet.

Next time I see the Neighbor across the street out I'll ask him as he works for KBM on the trucks.

If it had been the 48 team (professional cheaters w/nascars blessing and a get out of jail free card) I could see that to save unsprung weight.

I’m beginning to wonder about Tony Stewart. He fired Steve Addington and replaced him with Chad Johnston- Martin Truax’s old CC. Tony has proven that even if you win a championship your job isn’t safe - ask Darian Grubb. Also, I had to chuckle at a comment at the bottom of the article that stated (the Stewart Hass racing team drivers) “Stewart, Busch and Harvick all have tempers and Danica has PMS - what could possibly go wrong?”

Jr is 88.

His team orders are to help the 48 win or else.

Ever since Jr went to Hendrix His "drive" has disappeared.

The 5 & 24 are allowed to win here and there, Casey is still young & Jeffy owns the 48 on paper.

And Jr is not My Driver Tony is.

Back to the "tyre" explosion- the tyre burned, the hub/rotor/wheel & tyre blew off the axle housing.

Brad was treated like crap as the Champion all season by the media/nascar, starting with that smug 48 driver bitching about Brad drinking a Miller Lite in Homestead after winning the 2012 Championship.

It's His Sponsor for God's sake!!!

In other News:

(Hopefully Richard can keep His lunch down for this)

Its a great opportunity for me to be put with someone like Tony Stewart who is a proven winner, a proven champion, Johnston said. Obviously, the expectations are high so Im looking forward to prove what I can do and prove that I deserve this position. The second-generation racer most recently worked for Michael Waltrip Racing as Martin Truex Jr.s crew chief. Johnston replaces Steve Addington on the #14 Chevy; Addington had been the crew chief for the past two seasons. Addington is expected to go to Phoenix Racing as crew chief in 2014. Johnston joins fellow SHR newcomer Rodney Childers, who worked with Johnston at MWR and Evernham prior to accepting the crew chief position on the #4 Chevy with Kevin Harvick.(FoxSports)(11-19-2013)

UPDATE 2: Stewart-Haas Racing has reorganized its competition department as the championship-winning race team expands to field four cars in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series beginning in 2014. The changes are as follows: " Greg Zipadelli has been named vice president of competition where he will manage all four Sprint Cup teams, with each crew chief reporting to him. " Matt Borland has been named vice president of engineering. In this role, Borland will oversee all of the teams technical initiatives and various research and development projects. He will also transition from being an active crew chief to that of a mentor, specifically in regard to the crew chief position on the #41 Haas Automation team of driver Kurt Busch. " Daniel Knost has been promoted from race engineer on the #39 team to crew chief for the #41 Haas Automation team with Busch. Knost joined SHR in 2008 when it was Haas-CNC Racing after earning master of science and doctorate degrees in mechanical engineering from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech). Knost graduated from North Carolina State University in Raleigh with a bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering in 2001. " Chad Johnston has been named crew chief for the #14 Bass Pro Shops/Mobil 1 team of three-time Sprint Cup champion Tony Stewart. Johnston comes to SHR from Michael Waltrip Racing where since June 2011 he was the crew chief for the #56 team and driver Martin Truex Jr. Johnston joined MWR in 2010 as a race engineer. Johnston replaces Steve Addington, who has left SHR to pursue other opportunities. " Rodney Childers will be the crew chief for the #4 Budweiser/Jimmy Johns team of driver Kevin Harvick. Childers joined SHR in late October from MWR, where since 2009 he was a crew chief, first with the #00 team of driver David Reutimann (2009-2011) and later with the #55 team of drivers Brian Vickers, Mark Martin and Waltrip (2012-2013). " Tony Gibson remains as crew chief for the No. 10 GoDaddy team of Patrick.(SHR)(11-19-2013)
