Trained dogs don’t usually respond to verbal commands from strangers.
Per the article, the owner was home at the time. If the dog was trained, she could (and should) have given the command. Never assume a dog just ‘knows’, or that any visitor ‘knows’ a dog is safe. Virtually any dog can appear to be threatening.
That said, the officer needs to use a bit of common sense in this case.
There’s simple and friendly ways of handling almost any dog, and the trend seems to be either deliberate and doctrinal or complete psychosis. I don’t believe a whole force becomes insane over a short period of time, so doctrine it is.
There is a great deal of discussion out there on where the muslims are making successful inroads, and the amount in the military is now so high that they have dedicated interest groups.
