Well, I was 12-years-old and it hurt my shoulder. I hit the target right in the middle but it still hurt. I also shot a 12 guage and that was easier to handle than the 7mm.

“You’ll shoot your eye out”..........Oh no! It was the classic mother-AR-15 block!! That deadly phrase uttered many times by hundreds of mothers was not surmountable by any means known to kid-dom!!

If you want a semi-auto that isn’t an AR, you might want to consider the Ruger mini-30, which shoots 7.62x39, a decent cartridge.
Another, slightly harder to find item is the Winchester (I think) model 100, which is available (used) in .243, .270, .308. A friend has one and it’s a very nice hunting rifle.
Personally, I bought a Ruger Gunsite Scout for my bolt action pleasure. It’s a very nice rifle, you might like to have a look at it.

My vote for 30-30 ammo:
Has polymer tips that won't affect the primer of the next cartridge in the magazine.

That Rem 700 is $399? Jeez. That’s a bargain.

I had a Winchester autoloader in .338 win mag once. A real cannon.
I sold it because it was really too big for anything I hunted.

Ruger American in .308 or .30/06. You can get one for $350-$400.

Win 70 in .243 or .270, hard to beat.

Be ready for some sticker shock.

Whoops, I checked my records and the .338 win mag autoloader was a Browning BAR Safari model, not a Winchester.
