I upgraded a 20D to the 60D a few years ago via B&H. I got a fair deal on the trade, I think.
Lately, I've used the 18-135 as an all round kit lens but have a 100-400 and a 1.4 50, plus a 17-55 wide zoom. I shot a series of rookery pictures with the 400 along the lake that were published in the local paper. The nests were about 90 feet up in a group of sycamore trees.
All this should work with the 5D.
My previous camera was a Rebel....and I used the cheap 50mm on it almost exclusively.
I find I have to be careful thinking that a “better” camera will make me a better photographer..
