Craig Kimbrel is supposedly the heir to Mariano Rivera. In his postseason career as closer, Rivera recorded 27 appearances of 2+ innings.
Uribe bunted two balls foul, ... and then tomahawked a high fastball from David Carpenter into left-field stands for a shocking two-run homer ....
Note that I wrote "David Carpenter" and not "Craig Kimbrel."
The Braves had to win this game. Lose, and they go home. Somehow they lost -- in the late innings, no less -- without using the most dominant relief pitcher in the game.
The sad thing is, Gonzalez apparently didn't even think of using Kimbrel for two innings. "I think six outs isn't something we were even talking about in the dugout," he said after the game.
But whats the difference between four outs and six outs? Six pitches? Ten pitches? And that doesnt even factor in that the Dodgers had the 5-6-7 hitters due up in the eighth and the 8-9-1 hitters up in the ninth.
So instead you lost a game with a guy who had a 6.07 ERA last year for the Houston Astros.
... ".. I want the ball." We'll see if Kimbrel confirms that, but even if he didn't say that, his look of disgust, standing there with his hands on his hips, will haunt Braves fans all winter.
This should be covered in Managing 101. ... Who cares if it's the seventh inning or the eighth inning or the ninth. I'd rather lose with Carpenter in the ninth inning or the 10th inning or whenever ...
Look, managing your bullpen in a structured manner in the regular season is one thing.
October is not the regular season.
Fredi Gonzalez didn't think the best reliever in the game can get six outs.
He ended up getting none.

“Happy trails to Jim Leyland. HOF?” First ballot, no question.
I’m a superstitious person; I vote no to a new thread. Don’t want to disrupt BOS’s juju.
Thank you Nutmeg.
STL used the compensation pick they received for Albert Pujols signing with the LAA on a right hander from Texas A&M named Michael Wacha. He’s pitching the way he is just 17 months after he was drafted. WOW!!!
I can see Brandon Workman being a very solid starting pitcher next season; he seems to get it and take charge.
Franklin Morales/Matt Thornton: In any situation where the Sox need to get tough lefty out, I’d rather see Felix Doubront come into the game. I’d leave both of them off the WS roster.
Buchholtz: I’ve been thinking the same thing. He’s either still hurt, a headcase or a bit of both. And he IS hurt EVERY season. Should they win the WS, BOS will have a mountain of goodwill built up and trading Buchholtz will be an easier “sell” to the fanbase. Sell him high, just like they did with Inglesias.
3:50am? You party animals! :)
Nice that you went to the game; 4 more wins to go!!!
“If not for that “lucky” grand slam by Victorino, Farrell could have gone down in Red Sox history as another Grady Little.”
Damn right!!!
“Didn’t know about the “Thurston Howell wannabes” (also John Effin’ Kerry-wannabes), and the “pretentious douchbaggery”, LOL. But it doesn’t surprise me.”
They were out; we went into Boston (I got vetoed on Providence) early and they were just starting to leave. We left by 7:45-ish and watched the game from home.
I forgot about the circus. Yes that was in Boston too.
Ping to 522.
I knew Torii Hunter had one son attending Notre Dame University (I think on a football scholarship?). Is Torii Hunter Jr the same son, or another one? Still can't believe Torii has a college-age son!
"Tigers development program"... what specifically is that? Does that mean we won't be seeing Ben Verlander on the Connecticut Tigers next season?
Although I'm a Red Sox fan, I really will miss seeing Jim Leyland in that Detroit dugout. Just won't be the same...
Felix Dubront is the obvious choice over the inferior Morales and Thornton. Definitely leave 'em both off the WS roster (and get rid of them in the off-season). I also think Brandon Workman holds promise.
Yep: Sell Buchholz high, after we hopefully win the WS. I would love to see the Red Sox pick up a solid, *consistent* starter like a Michael Wacha in his place.
I never knew you were such an excellent baseball analyst... ;-)
Hope you're feeling better, by the way...
Of course we always come up to Boston via the Mass Pike. What a massive difference traffic-wise it is to attend a game at Fenway Park vs. TD Garden, up in NW Boston. Our game was on a Thursday night, too, so you could imagine the traffic nightmare.
We were not familiar with the area, so we just pulled into the expensive parking garage under the Garden. Somehow we managed to arrive about 15 minutes before the game started, although we had hoped to get there earlier.
The Fenway Park area seems like an easy suburban location compared to the TD Garden area. Of course we've been going to Fenway for decades... we know the area pretty well by now.
When did the Regatta take place? Early morning?
ROTFL!
Nice that you went to the game; 4 more wins to go!!!
It was expensive, but - yes - it was nice. And rare.
I'm sure we can't afford the WS ticket prices. The Red Sox dribbled some tix out via their website late on Sunday night (I think it was actually midnight on Monday). The tix were snapped up in minutes. If any went to StubHub.com, etc., the ticket prices have already doubled or tripled by now.
Have you seen the forecast for the next few days? Big cold front coming in for tomorrow... it's going down to the 30s at night for several days in a row. Paying $250+ to sit outside in 30-40 degree temps? No thanks!
Torii Hunter Jr does have a football scholarship but recently broke his leg. Torii Hunter Sr is 38 years old so an 18 or 19 year old son isn’t out of the question.
He and Ben Verlander have both signed on to play double and triple A ball in the Tigers organization after college.
IMHO, it's Leland but now he's gone.......
“Again, I agree with everything you’ve said in #522.”
Well, thank you.
It was announced earlier today that Lackey will pitch game 2. And there are no changes to the roster. So, the sucky pitchers we’ve talked about will be available, although you’ve got to assume that Farrell wouldn’t use Morales for anything but laundry detail.
Selling Buchholtz: Like I said in this thread a while back, this BOS team will most likely look very different next season. So, this is this group’s only chance to win it all.
“I never knew you were such an excellent baseball analyst... ;-)”
Thanks again. I’ve divested from the Patriots and refocused on baseball and taken a bigger liking to the NHL.
“Hope you’re feeling better, by the way...”
It’s been the year from Hell; I’m still here so that’s good I guess. One day at a time...
It was until 4-ish PM I think.
“Paying $250+ to sit outside in 30-40 degree temps? No thanks!”
100% agree!
“The Fenway Park area seems like an easy suburban location compared to the TD Garden area.”
The whole of BOS has become very difficult to park in, so naturally, the parking lots/garages make out.
It used to be that a parking ticket was cheaper than paying to park, but the city of Boston caught onto that, too.
“Paying $250+ to sit outside in 30-40 degree temps? No thanks!”
That’s why with the extra rounds of playoffs, I’d like to see MLB cut the schedule back to 154 games, so that that the season can start in April and end before November.
Of course, it’ll never happen, but...
Buchholtz out?
I know the thread title may be confusing, but several of us don't want to change it (thus maybe changing the Red Sox' luck, lol).
This is the post-season/October baseball live thread...
World Series starts tonight! (Wednesday, October 23)
