You are correct. Back then, the word "gay" meant "happy."

"Queer" meant what "gay" means today. Language is living, alive, and dynamic. I don't like that language is that way, but it doesn't care what I like or hate. Language is dynamic.

When... was released in 1959, 'gay' was defined... as A: carefree and merry - B: brightly colored; brilliant - C: given to pleasure, esp in social entertainment

In 1972 I was nearly laughed out of the seventh grade by my peers because I thought gay meant happy.
