Funny, I don’t recall reading anybody making a big deal out of his military service. I’ve read some hundreds of books on the Civil War, the entire Lincoln/Douglas debates, and quite a few biographies of Lincoln. I even have a multi-volume set of his letters.

It's a modern liberal point of mention, much like you initially noting his captaincy, after I brought up that he had served as a private under Z. Taylor. Perhaps Lincoln was even under the command of Davis at one time - just speculating...

Lincoln did appear to enjoy a good "payback". Might that have been a small factor that caused increased hostilities after his election - again, just my speculation.
