I am grieving for losses of my own, and reading about yours brings them right up fresh all over again.

Rescuing another dog will help with the immediate pain, but will never take that special place in your heart, which will always miss and mourn the ones who have loved you, and who you have loved.

I am 70 years old, and still miss my very first dog, who was killed when I was 7 years old.

You are absolutely correct. My heart is sad for, yet celebrates:

(dogs) Snoopy(3 months), Scraps(12 years), Sparkluppagus(9 years), Muttley Crue(15 years), Rooty-Toot-Zoot-Snoot(14 years), Buttercup(7 years), Bishop(15 years), Diego(10 years), Pheadra(6 years), Misty(4 years), Porkchop(21 years), See-chee(14 years), Tootles(8 years), Tilley(4 years), Pollox(7 years), Castor(8.5 years),

Not so many cats, but :

DamnedCat(3 years), Mephistopheles(2 years), Kajira(3 years), Spike(9 years), Quatorze(16.5 years).

Current dogs are:

Zip(13 years) and SpaZZ(3 years) are both doing well.
