Inventing a too creative alibi like she used after the fact (not premeditated) is dangerous because too many loose ends contradict it.
Now if she said it was an accident and she was nearby and there were no witnesses then all the police have is the fact that she was not happy, then she must make up a story and stick to it. She could have said he ran ahead of her and she doesnt know what happened.
