It was a mistake to make college the chief path to careers. What you’ll see now is more on-the-job training supplemented by online courses and certification exams. That will work better for a lot of people.

It will work better for employees, but not for the HR Nazis. They love college degrees because the are a convenient screening mechanism. Most HR folks have no clue what skills are required for a job, so they resort to crutches that can be reduced to a resume and verified by a records check. Qualified on paper. They do this to meet hiring goals and to protect themselves from the Department of Labor bureaucrats. Some companies defer all of their hiring decisions to the HR folks to satisfy their lawsuit adverse attorneys. Most of these companies will become former companies before long.
