In Brain Wave, an excellent SF story by Poul Anderson, the solar system suddenly emerges from an energy-damping field in which it has been immersed for millions of years. One of the results is that the intelligence of the human race basically doubles over the course of a few days.

In “Brain Wave”, it wasn’t just human intelligence that increased dramatically. All species were affected the same way. IIRC, the story started with a rabbit caught in a trap. It started thinking much more clearly, and figured out how to escape.

The way things are going, here on Earth, I think that we are going farther into the “energy damping field” and becoming more stupid, day by day! Just sayin’
