"And I stand by my view that you are ever stuck to this arbitrary and illogical rule that you were taught in grade school. There’s no other reasonable explanation for becoming a grammar police for a dated and now little-used rule."

That's illogical, dishonest and hysterical. I criticized an error committed by the writer of the article over this thread, and you reacted with a personal display. If you want to begin learning, work through an applied English text.

I edited for graduates and publications before becoming too disgusted to continue babysitting affected feminists and other non-analytical minds. As for the MLA, it started in the 1800s and has published other references since then. I used MLA publications before 1985. Discuss it further with yourself.

You, sir, are simply ignorant, but go sashaying about FR as a grammar Nazi, ‘correcting’ what you perceive to be a grammatical error. I simply pointed out to you that what had got your grammatical nose out of joint was not an error by the most relevant common standards.

In response, you have been insulting and you have only further demonstrated your limited understanding. The MLA published a separate document for writing in the academic world before the 1980s, when it first weighed in with a manual of style intended for the broader world.

I have a graduate writing degree and have worked professionally as a writer and editor for decades. I have tried to broaden your perspective by referring you to multiple appropriate and accepted authorities, and I am done with this conversation.
