While we're sharing spidee stories....last week I had paddled 15 mins. across a Vermont lake....looked down and coming toward me is an enormous garden spider on the shell of my kayak. I really like spiders and am not apt to kill them but put them outside, unharmed, where they belong.
Normally garden spiders are placid and don't bite [but they can and do] ...but I decided there was no room for both of us and I turned around and brought him to the shore and flicked him onto the beach to torment someone else.

The worst spider bite I ever had was from one of those.

I had a huge black spider in my driveway a few years ago. It was all black and looked exactly like the fake rubber spiders they sell for pranks. It had a body the size of a half dollar but it wasn't round, more like a spade. I've lived in CT my entire life and I never saw anything like it before. I hesitated to step on it even though I was wearing boots. I wish I captured it so I could have had it identified.
