HF is my preference. Other than a skip zone here or there it is very reliable.

I have these just to listen. The top and bottom have cellular frequencies unblocked (pre 1994):

I was told, by someone who knows the following:
Baofeng UV5 and UV5R, no functional difference between the two that I can tell. The firmwares a little newer in the UV5R but thats about it

Here is my solar powered WB6YNM ham station. A Kenwood HF rig and a Kenwood 2m rig, plus a 2m packet KPC-3P packet TNC and an old Motorola 2m radio running 65 watts 24/7. The station is powered by an Optima 12V battery that are charged with 3 solar panels. I typically get 3 amp charge in bright sun.
I have one of the Baofeng 2m HT radios and have a cable for it so I can also run 2m packet on it. I don't have an antenna adapter so I can use my big Diamond F23A 2m antenna with a 7.8 dB gain.
usconservative do you have the part number for the adapter for the Baofeng to PL259 or the one you used?
I like the Baofeng and it can't be beat for the price.

I would say that 15 meters is your best bet for working JA...that’s where I have about 20 JAs over the last couple of years. Also have them confirmed on 80, 20, 17, 12 and 10 during the same period, phone and CW. Still need to catch them on 30 and 40 meters.
That’s with wire antennas and I don’t own an amp.

Thanks, Japan is very tough to get here in the Midwest ... not sure what part of the country you're in. Also guessing (since you mentioned CW) that a fair number of your contacts into Japan are CW?

Located in western Kentucky. Contacts are about 50/50 phone and CW. Right now JAs strong on 17m. 73

Great, I need to put up a 17m wire now ..... been meaning to rebuild my fan dipole anyway. Now’s as good a time as any. Tried tuning 17m on my Mosley Tri-Bander .... to say that doesn’t work so well would be an understatement!

12 meters and 17 meters have been my money bands this summer. 12m was open yesterday and today, but 10 meters continues its slumber. Only 5 DX on 10m since the end of May.
I would think the Tri bander might tune for 10, not sure as I’ve only used wire antennas. Good luck es 73.

My Mosley's a 10/15/20 tribander ... my fan dipole is 6/10/15/20/40/75/160. (15 tunes on the 40 wire.) I've been thinking about adding 12 and 17 to it since tuning for both on my fan dipole is sub-optimal. As it is, I typically "forget" 15 meters exists so I'm lucky to remember to check that band.
Have the wire and parts to add 12 and 17 -- if the weather breaks this weekend and it stops raining here long enough I may be able to do it. Thanks for the tip on 12 and 17.

I meant to say that it might tune for 12 meters.
