I grew up with the metric system but we had to learn the American system too.
No big deal.
(The last thing to go metric in Sweden was lumber and building supplies, boards and nails was measured in inches until 1980 or so.)
The only thing I have to say in favor of the old fashioned system is that it rolls off the tongue easier in English:

miles - kilometers
yards,feet - meters
inch - centimeter
pounds - kilograms
cups - deciliters
and so on.

I only have to look up conversion factors occasionally, otherwise I stopped translating a long time ago and just got used to the units used by the locals here in the US.

My Dutch friend has lived in the US for over 30 years and she has never gotten comfortable with the American system.
