Ya, plants that can barely keep up with demand as it is.

Convert those BTUs (or whatever your preferred unit of energy/power) consumed by your average car times half a million and put that load on the power plants and wait for the brownouts to commence.

And then, wait for 20 years for new technologies that may or may not work, or the enviros or the “not in my backyard” liberals to fight bringing online any other source of energy other than windmills and solar which are completely inadequate for suppling the power/energy gap.

The MPG-e of a Tesla is something crazy in the triple digits. Yes, it still needs energy, but its amazing how little it needs. What more limits the environmental sustainability of Tesla is its need for Lithium.

Re: “Charged by what? Closed coal plants? No nuke plants?”

Exactly.

Instead, we will have to build natural gas generators to charge up the electric cars!

Wouldn't it make more economic sense for Tesla to build natural gas fueled cars and put the natural gas DIRECTLY into the car instead?

Or, in someone’s dream world, solar panels and windmills will provide the electricity we need.

Sure - too bad we can't generate or store “Green” electricity at any price even close to break even.

Too bad we will need to build just as many natural gas generators as before to handle peak demand, and cloudy days, and night time, and windless days.

What complete insanity.

One third of Americans have a college education or higher, and THIS is what passes for serious thinking?

Fossil fuels equal high torque and power. Anything related to electricity is too susceptible to failure including an EMP incident.

Oh no that can't be. Mr Obamavelt gonna build us new huge solar power plants that magically produce massive amounts of power. His magical mandate wand gonna save us all.

Say what? The massive amount of electrical power a solar panel manufacturer uses just to make a panel? Oh Mr Obamavelt got the answer for that. he's gonna wave his magical mandate wand and wind turbines will spring up like daisies throughout the land. But they aren't reliable? Well good grief you expect Mr Obamavelt to be a miracle worker and address all the energy crisis problems his policies and administration has created? Shut up and enjoy the candles. Your government mule will be issued to you within a few years. Building the wagon is your duty as a citizen.
