I have a Bell & Howell Auto 35, which as I understand was the prototype of the Canon AE1. (I don't know if that was true or not.) I got it in 1972, and have always loved it. AFAIK, the main difference was only the front element of the lens was changeable.

Prototype of the Canon FT (and later FTb), not the ‘automatic electronic’ AE1 featuring one of the first SLRs with a plastic body. Search for a picture of the Canon FT or FTb, you'll see they're very similar.
