I retired 10 years ago to take of elderly parents. Dad died peacefully last year and Mom is still kicking.
After spending the afternoon in the eye doc's office with Mom, came home and, after settling her down, went for the mail.
New neighbor has a Pit-Bull and today this dog was loose. As I went to the mail box, the dog ran over to the middle of the street (perhaps 15 feet away) and bared his teeth.
His owners were in the yard but did not call the dog. At the same time a UPS truck stop in front of their house, but the driver refused to get out of his truck.
Question is "what steps do I take as a good citizen?"
The next door neighbors inherited the house from the girl's grandmother. The girl's husband is a born again Christian...but he was previously in prison for drugs.
Pit Bull is young but large and aggressive.
Freeper opinions appreciated.
BTW, I have cats who lounge around in the front yard. If this dog kills my cats...I am apt to become upset. And an upset Freeper (armed to the teeth) is not a nice thing to behold.
Have they been made aware that there is a pit in the neighborhood?
I'm gonna tell them tonight.
Yup. Will do.
First, talk to your new neighbors.
“Good evening, I’m RoosterRedux, and I wanted to have a word with you about Spot.”
Keep it polite, factual and civil. Document the conversation. If your state allows one-party consent for recording audio, you may choose to record the conversation to establish this was done.
You don’t have a dog problem, you have an owner problem. All dogs should be properly obedience trained and socialized—it sounds like this owner hasn’t been doing a great job so far.
Hopefully, if he is a believer, this will be the wake up call he needs to see a concrete way to show love to his neighbor.
Call the cops they will tell you what to do.We called the cops and put in a complaint. It’s the law the dog should be on a lease.
That was my first thought also...but the humane society folks said that's NOT the best way to handle it. Could lead to unnecessary neighborhood tension if the dog is ultimately picked up by Animal Control.
The very fact that the dog is loose demonstrates that there is a problem. Humane Society folks even suggested waiting a few days to call animal control unless the dog is still running free. They said the dog owner doesn't need to know if or from whom a complaint was received.
You are truly the stereotypical low class kind of person who owns a pit bull. I bet you take it over to michael vicks house to fight on friday nights.
You have to stop reading where the text ends.
You add ‘details’ that are not present in the description.
If you wish to be functional, you do have to function.
>> “ If you knew anything about dogs you would know the dont go for the face anyway.” <<
.
Absolutely correct!
Most of the nuts posting here are disfunctional ooze running down the gutter. We have to be in charge of our situation, and yielding to irrational fear makes that impossible (bring on cradle to early grave care).
You can’t shoot everything you’re scared of, and the police can’t come everytime you need a kleenex.

That’s because if everybody was that responsible and honest, who would need the Humane Society?
Welcome to the New America (same as the old soviet union)
Get functional people!
Stop looking for someone else to do your job. You’re giving away your freedom fast.
Wow!
Eaker is lowlife now?
You’d love to live in Sverige!
So you two asswipes were there?
You’re calling me a liar and ooze when you weren’t even there.
GFY
Bite me
Flush You!
Buy a box of dog treats. Keep some in your pockets when you go out for the mail. Give the dog a few of them every time you see it. Within a very short time, you may have a friend for life.
We made a complaint and then found out many did.One dog had to be muzzled-he was trying to bite People. My husband spoke to the woman directly and she said FU.So then I called her a Bitch.RUMBLE TIME.
As we see here owners of dangerous dogs won’t admit their dog is a problem. Usually the dogs are a problem because of the owner. Either the owner encourages the behavior, or they are just too lazy to properly train the dog.
Very good suggestion, but I would suggest dropping them on the ground at first! :o)
LOL! Agreed. We have neighbors who own English Mastiffs. Their dogs regularly come into our yard, so I made friends with them early on. :)
We always have little Grandkids around.Obey the law and keep your dog on a lease.Easy.As for the B Lady-she stopped coming around when she saw the size of my family.
I had earlier decided to engage them but when I explained this to the Humane Society folks (who work hand in glove with Animal Control), they explained to me the failure of the dog's owners to take immediate action demonstrated a rather common misunderstanding of the potential danger of a pit bull that their owners often have.
To them, he is a harmless teddy bear and wouldn't hurt a fly (and that might even be true). They might be completely oblivious to the fact that their dog is bred to fight and kill.
