human sacrifice was pretty much the norm in prehistory. The romans were grossed out by the cartheginians (who were a caananite people) for their child sacrifice practices but a couple hundred years earlier the romans were also doing human sacrifice. the greeks were not into human sacrifice by the time they met the persians in battle. But their tradgedies describe a time a half millenium before. the greek tragedies start with the sacrifice by Agamemnon of his daughter so as to bring good fortune in war. Even the israelites prior to the destruction of the 1st temple would fall into caananite practices in the valley of hinnon.
Here we’re just talking about the classical world. But really, human sacrifice was at one time practiced in Europe, the new world oceania south asia, asia. The last great human sacfrice religion was in benin or Modern Nigeria. The brits fought them in the 1880’s. they describes roadways littered with bodies of sacrifices as the armies of benin retreated before the advancing british.
Even today there are reports in london of hacked up nigerian bodies being found in the Thames. They’re generally attributed to nigerians doing human sacrifice on each other.
That’s likely part of the reason that the Nigerian Episcopal church is so fiercely against homosexuality. They are up close and personal cheek by jowl with the ancient evil.
For that matter, even without being a christian, you could ascribe to Jesus the credit for banning human sacrifice generally throughout the world.
Alas, the great diminishment of the bible in the West makes possible the return of the ancient evils.

You might say the radical environuts who believe they can change the weather (global warming) supposedly caused by human industrial development are engaged in the same sort of suicidal impulses that will affect our children and children’s children if they are successful.
