Does anyone, um, actually, er, you know, uh eat sugar beets?Never ran into anyone who did - at least as a vegetable. The farmers would grow them, and we'd see the results of the harvest going past the house in dump trucks on the way to the sugar plant. If I remember correctly, at the time there was one in Fremont, OH (could be off, after all, it was a few decades ago...) The sugar was the same (sucrose) that came from sugar cane and we would buy the brand that came from the local beets instead of Domino's which came from cane..
Domino's ran an ad campaign trying to convince us that somehow sucrose from cane was different (and better) than sucrose from our beets.. Now, every once in a while, a beet or two would bounce out of one of those trucks and us young folk would snatch it up.. You needed a pocket knife, but you could cut off strips and chew it.. for your daily sugar fix ;-)
