I don't have a lot of contact with children, but I used to be one...I'm imagining a scene that goes something like this:

"Timmy, what was the impact of the Code of Hammurabi in Mesopotamian society?"

(deer in the headlights look) "Um...I like ice cream!"

Not for nuthin, but the entire legal system is based on the “Code.”

In a context of how we developed from the Ancient Civilizations of the Middle East, this is not unreasonable. Of course, it needs to be kept in its proper context.

First Grade is probably a little early. I recall learning about the introduction of farming and what not, some time in grammar school. But the whole experience is a little foggy.

First graders should be taught to learn, to think, and to begin to reason.

If learning about the Code of Hammurabi furthers these ends, I’m all for it.

Since Common Core’s purpose is to promote slavish devotion to authority, I doubt that the use of the Code of Hammurabi as part of it’s design will do any good.

Why not? 1st graders know a lot of things that aren’t so, and about cartoons, so why not teach them about truth?

Our homeschool “common core”:

***Scripture study every day.
***Go to the library, and over a span of 5 years, read every book in the children's section.
