Apollo 11 astronaut Edwin Buzz Aldrin salutes the United States flag while Neil Armstrong photographs
him. A moment caught on 16mm film here.

The Apollo Image Gallery is unavailable for the immediate future due to server overload. Access will be restored in coming days once the publicity generated by the petapixel.com article subsides. Need to check back in later. Should be great.

I'm pretty sure that these photos were shot with one of the really great cameras, the Hasselblad 500el:

And that flag — and those footprints, for that matter — are still there, and will be until they open a Starbucks in Mare Tranquilus.

I’m guessing that solar radiation has completely bleached out all of the color in the flag in just a few months after they planted it.

We could not do this again with unlimited funds.
We don’t have the engineers, and we don’t have the manufactory.
When I was a boy, I dreamed of listening to the first words spoken by men on Mars. Too bad I don’t speak Mandarin.

This article could probably have used an editor. Sadly, I don’t think there were too many great images from Apollo 1.
Great gallery though. Thanks for the post!

Good point. I don’t know that any dye is colorfast enough to withstand almost 50 years of that kind of sun.
