The headline is a bit misleading; while there were humans with proto-Neanderthal traits as early as 600,000350,000 years ago, Neanderthals as such didn’t exist until approximately 135,000 years ago.

It seems to me that I knew this. Wouldn’t there be physical and brain changes that evolved along with growing language use? That takes a long time. As long as we’re speculating anyway.
