Honestly, I’d be somewhat OK if people would at least bell their cats. Fundamentally, I don’t want cats in my yard taking out songbirds and the yard bunny that lives in the big burrow in the middle of the dogwood/azalea island out front.
Cat bells are a good idea. Wish my old cat Lucky had one when he killed that rat. Brought it home. Lucky died the next day, apparently from catching a rat that had been poisoned. Maybe the thing would have run away if he’d heard that bell and Lucky would still be on the planet.
I had a lot of cats because people dropped them off in the neighborhood, and it took a while to neuter, tame, and then give away about half of them. Once the dust settled, I got collars with bells, and the bird catchng dropped to almost nothing.
Now 2 are blind, and the third is not a hunter (hereditary blindness). The blind/almost blind ones do catch occasional lizards or rodents, bring them to the front of the house, and if the prey is alive, the cats are rewarded with their fave treat (cheese). Mostly the prey is alive and “relocated”.
