The U.S. Secret Service detected a security breach at the S.C. Department of Revenue on Oct. 10, but it took state officials 10 days to close the attackers access and another six days to inform the public that 3.6 million Social Security numbers had been compromised.
The attack also exposed 387,000 credit and debit card numbers. The stolen data included other information people file with their tax returns such as names and addresses. Businesses taxpayer identification numbers also potentially have been comprised in the attack that is being described as one of the nations largest against a state agency.

South Carolina appears not to be the only state to witness this kind of massive intrusion into personal data and all states should revisit the real cause of this unbelievable exposure. (I was one of them)
The 'solution' that the state Governments of these states came up with was a free subscription to sites which will protect your personal credit and other data.
That's too little and too late, the data is now out there and they should have dug much more into exactly where the source originated.
Due to the new revelations about the IRS intrusion, everyone should now be seeing the truth.
For incompetence, try a graduate of a public school.
For increased incompetence, try a government official.
For total incompetence, try a liberal government official.
For utterly complete and irreversible incompetence, try a state tax or IRS official.
And - naturally, at the top of ineptness stands the Obamadork.
All true and undeniable.
This is a year old guys. We have already have been remedied.
