LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) The Los Angeles River Recreation Zone officially opened up to the public Monday.
City officials launched the new summer boat and recreational program at 10 a.m. at Marsh Park in Elysian Valley.
For the first time since the Los Angeles River was channelized in the 1930′s, the public will be welcomed to access and enjoy a 2.5-mile stretch of the Los Angeles River near downtown to boat to kayak, walk, and fish, officials said in a statement.
The recreation zone starts at LA River crossover at Fletcher Boulevard and Oso Park, Chief Ranger Fernando Gomez with the Mountains Recreation and Conservation Authority told KNX1070′s Margaret Carrero.
This should be interesting when flash floods hit.. and it will happen.. Eat the fish? no way..
“Does that mean they are going to allow it during the height of winter when there IS water in it an its moving at 20 miles an hour?”
In 1947 a buddy and I took a rubber life raft from Atwater to Long Beach when it was over 1/2 full in a storm with our bicycles and rode back to Silverlake on them!
an airboat would be fun.. with a 50 cal mounted on the front... for the stretches where gangs take potshots at ya..
how far is that
“Atwater aka Frog Town and once had some potent gangbangers.”
My ofice was there for 57 years and the gang bangers that I went to high school with have grand kids that are 10 times worse than the Frog Town gang of the 40s and 50s!
“The El Ninos back in the late 70s filled the LA river just about to the top where it goes past Compton”
In 1916 my father came up to LA durring the storm and rode the street car from down town to Glendale and I wouldn’t go any farther than Fletcher DR because the water was up rto the ties which were about 60 feet above Roverside Dr and Fletcher Dr.
Our office was under 80 feet of water.
All of Atwater, Eagle Rock, and So. Glendale were under water because it couldn’t get ot from between Mt Washington and Elesian Park.
When I was a kid I can remember going down and sitting on the top edge with my feet in the water.
looks like you could use a jeep ala rat patrol most of the time btw i put 16 rainbow trout in the smoker just this morning they are running the Snake pretty high here right now so the fishing this weekend weredn't worth going but i went out on friday with a coworker and i did catch one little german brown and h caught a buzz
funny thing is....the LA media runs this story every year
Probably 20 miles or more.

Like Mark Twain said: Cross a Southern California River and you have to get up and dust yourself off.
I know that guy from the website seeing stars. His name is gary and he sure does his homework. They film dexter all around where I used to live (Long Beach).
I believe the terminator scenes might also be from the river “bed” in the north long beach area.
That is not a clueless comment. No one should eat fish from the LA river!!! Ew!
Ben, it was almost to the top in north long beach about 8-10
Years ago too.
We’re headed to salmon bear and eagle country where not even a willys is gonna get ya from fjord to fjord unless ya take th glaciers. .. sounds like a good feed there.. Moose and mountain goat should be pretty active too.. I could use a good mooseburger about now. ;-]
