My great-grandparents, who left Ireland in the 1880’s, said they left because of British oppression
Blacks rightly complain about being slaves in America for over 200 years.
But that's nothing compared to what the Brits did to the Irish for over 600 years - in their own country.

For those interested in the English- Irish situation in the mid 19th century, the little book; Why They Charged, by Cecil Woodham-Smith is a great introduction. Though it focuses mainly of the Crimean War, the build up discusses the Irish situation frankly and dramatically.
She also wrote a more definitive work called the Great Hunger on the famine itself which is a good bit more detailed.
