The Watergate break-in occurred in June of 1972; Nixon was re-elected in November of that year, and started his second term in January 1973. He resigned in August 1974.

I don’t recall anyone making the argument “What difference does it make now” as the scandal heated up in the spring of 1973, even though Nixon had been re-elected six months earlier.

Also in 1973 came the first arab oil embargo. What’s happening now is the inverse of that first oil shock..........
