It’s now official. The Vikings have cut punter Chris Kluwe.

The 31-year-old was given the news Monday morning at Winter Park during a meeting with General Manager Rick Spielman.

(snip)

Kluwe’s release will not come without some controversy. The veteran punter has raised his profile in recent years by speaking out on political and social issues, most notably taking a firm stance in support of gay marriage and gay rights.

Before the lobbyists attack the Vikings, Kluwe was in the bottom half of the league in net punting and next to last in the league in punts inside the 20.

But that won't stop the lobbyists.

He was also coming off a multi-year, multi-million dollar contract. He could have kept his mouth shut and he’d still have gotten cut.

That won't stop the gay mafia...they always go to the mattresses.

Coming out for gay marriage won’t get him the brass ring. If he comes out as gay, then he gets the White-house tour and the libs fawning over him.

It is true, though, that the most important player in a Bill Musgrave offense, after Adrian Peterson, is the punter.

“Kluwe’s release will not come without some controversy.”

Yeah, by his own deliberate making.

Just out of curiosity ... given the cultural significance of Chris Kluwe (deserved, or undeserved) these days, is there a particular reason this vanished from the Minnesota sidebar? Not like I claimed breaking news or anything ...

I merely seek information.

Sorry, Chris. If you wanted to try and save your flagging career and scare the Vikes off of cutting you, you should have pulled a Jason Collins and come out AS gay.

Not to pick nits or anything but I believe the punter is considered part of the defense.

Overpaid NFL player who has performed poorly starts making lots of public speeches in favor of homosexual causes. When he gets cut his speeches, not his performance on the field, becomes the issue.

Expect to see a lot more of this from marginal players.

Yep, his claims have all been a prelude to what he knew was coming. He sucked and knew he was going to be cut! Let the whining commence!

Technically, you are right. But he cleans up Musgrave's predictable play calling. :)

Not at all. When the punter takes the snap from the center, he is free to throw, run with the ball, or kick, just as the quarterback is. If he should fumble the ball, and there is a mad pile up over recovery, and the punting team recovers, the referee will announce that the OFFENSE has recovered the ball.

The fact that control of the ball changes hands after the ball is kicked is no more relevant than control changing after an interception by the QB or a fumble by a running back.
