They were suborbital, knew that, but I’d never known about this photo until now. If the Third Reich hadn’t gotten sidetracked into that little multi-continent misunderstanding [euphemism], a German would have orbited the Earth, probably before 1950; they’d have gotten to the Moon by 1960 or 1961 (the F1 engine development happened during the Eisenhower administration, as a project to deliver Ed Teller’s huge-ass H-Bomb design, which was then superseded by smaller designs; the B-52 also resulted from that Ed Teller bomb), and been on Mars by 1970.

We were indeed very lucky that we were able to ‘inherit’ much of their technology after the war. If they would have been more patient and worked on those projects, rather going to war when they did, there might not have been any stopping them. Of course many things could have been driving the time tables/politics back then(not the least of which was Hitler’s inpatients/stupidity).

I think it was the German's goal to orbit a man by 1949, at least that's what I've read in one book.
