I am looking forward to the first “brute force” deep space probe intended for that purpose. It would initially be shuttled via chemical rockets to gravitational slingshots around planets, and then its would use an ion drive to really get it up to serious speed.

On the outside it would look like an armored ball, with an engine out the back, and the plates would separate as needed for sensitive instruments to adjust navigation, but otherwise be protected from space dust and larger particles.

Only when it was in deep space and out of harm’s way would it fully open up, possibly even using its armor for fuel.
