Without question songwriter? I can’t go along with that. Tom Petty, Ronnie Van Zant, and Phil Lynott I think were better.

Well, I suppose “best” is subjective. The guys you mention are OK, but they don’t have that many songs with as much global appeal to their credit as Springsteen. For me, Springsteen’s songs depicted the heart of the urban/suburban vision of girls, cars, rebelliousness, hope, pain, victory, and love. Admittedly, I grew up in a northeast city, just a few years behind Springsteen, so his songs and experiences were my own. If you don’t share that experience, or worse, reject it, then yeah, you might not think much of him.
