Over Easter weekend, franchise quarterback Tony Romo signed a 6-year $108 million contract extension to remain with the Dallas Cowboys. While the estimated $18 million per year makes Romo the fifth highest paid player based on salary, he is actually the new highest paid player after taxes in the NFL.
The Cowboys QB now claims the top spot previously held by Drew Brees of the New Orleans Saints because of no state income tax in Texas. With Romos income tax burden being 39.6 percent the top marginal federal income tax rate in the U.S. and estimated tax liability of $7.12 million, he still stands to earn $752,000 more than Brees.

Now if only he wouldn’t fold like a cheap lawn chair every time the game is on the line...
Don’t these guys pay income taxes based on the location the games are played?
So it varies depending on the schedule?
That’s a lot of money per interception.
I don’t really pay much attention to the NFL but I sometimes watch Dallas just to see how fellow Troy alum Demarcus Ware is doing.
Romo sure doesn’t look that good to me but then the rest of the offense can make a big difference in how well a QB does.
True, but the teams play half their games at home.
Yes, but if Romo had his away games in NY and Cal, and Brees in Florida and Texas, it could really change the numbers.
There are four critical positions on an NFL team and QB is not one of them. The four are owner, general manager, personnel director, and head coach. Any sort of a major problem at one of those positions, e.g. Jerry Jones or Vinnie Cerrato, and nothing else will help. Jerry Jones basically deserves to lose every game the Cowboys ever play and paying Romo any sort of a super salary is a good start for that.
Not a bad paycheck for about the 12th best QB in the league.
But Romo does have to take a lot of reps.
Kevin Kolb may have the best deal on salary per rep.
I love the way people bash Q B’S like its only them on the field. Get real it takes a team and Romo carries this one half the time.
And how much more does Romo make than everyone else on the team?
It isn't like he hasn't done it before either. The gripping the ball fiasco comes to mind that other year.
Everyone knew who had made the key mistake in that last game last year, and it is simply amazing that not only are they sticking with him, but they are rewarding him like this.
They would be better off with the Kansas State QB from last year who still knows how to run the football, unlike Romo.
Thats up to the owners, its still a team game if they all got paid the same would he still be running for his life half the time. I bet yes.
It just shows how bad the series of post-Aikman quarterbacks must have been for the Cowboys.
To command that kind of cash Romo must have naked pictures of Jerry Jones smoking crack with underage hookers.
Is Jones REALLY this stupid? One playoff game with this guy and he pays him the highest salary in the league? REALLY!!!
I gave up on the boys and now a dedicated Texan fan.
