The horse chesnut trees I remember were HUGH and healthy.

They are still HUGH, but the Autumn (fall) colours (colors) start by mid July and the bark oozes a black sticky fluid.
This is all in the last five years, after you evacuated back west.
Many have been chopped down because the heart wood has rotten out.
