Sometimes they put stop signs on the “main road” to control speeding.

I thought about that, but it couldn't be that on this road. There are only three streets, not even enough distance to get up to speed before you get to a big five way intersection. (the red arrows are from my house to the intersection in question)

We don't have that kind of problem, so it didn't make sense...
