When in public in recent months I have sometimes heard this song that I thought was really good. It took me months to track down the title, which required me to constantly hit “seek” on my car radio. When I finally nailed it down, it turned out it was so pedestrian as to be the “coronation song” of an American Idol winner. How discouraging is that?

That can certainly be discouraging. It was probably "A Moment Like This" from Kelly Clarkson. There is a song that used to annoy me and it was called "Home" by Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros. However, it has grown on me somewhat because it is somewhat of a happy, bouncy song, despite the weird banter about falling out of a window and bleeding all over the place.

If you have one of those "smartphones" that allow you to download apps, you should download the free app called "SoundHound". When you hear a song you like on the radio, you just point the phone at the car radio and it automatically tells you the artist and title of the song. I thought that was the most amazing thing when I first saw it several years ago. But now it's no big deal and I actually get pissed when it fails to recognize a particular song.
