I would say go for it. It's rather liberating; I did so before this last election. (I would not, under any circumstances, vote for Romney -- as I firmly believe[d] that he was [politically] identical to Obama.) I wound up voting for Gary Johnson, the Libertarian nominee, who was my State's former governor and did such a good job in executive office that he got re-elected in a solidly Democrat state and left with a budget surplus.
I am Conservative through and through, but why let them pigeon hole you?
Or, worse yet, why let them tell you you're not conservative if you don't toe the Republican line and vote McCain, Romney, Jeb Bush [?], or whatever other statist they nominate?
Keep the opposition guessing. That is a valid tactic.
Conversely, it weakens Conservative polling numbers
