Though meticulously planned, film's most important night of the year rarely goes off without a hitch. When you get too many of Hollywood's biggest names in a room, there's bound to be some mayhem. Here are the 10 worst Oscar moments of all time.
10. James Franco and Anne Hathaway host the Oscars
James Franco and Anne Hathaway are great actors, but the two didnt make such great Oscar hosts in 2011. They were called boring, spectacularly bad and the like by critics across the board. The worst moment of the night came when Franco dressed up as Marilyn Monroe, pretty much guarantying that he would never again host the awards show.
9. Jack Palance shows us he can do push ups
Jack Palance had already showed the world he was the best supporting actor out there in 1992, so he decided to show off his strength when he took the Oscars stage to accept the award. He used his time in the spotlight to show he could do a one-armed push up...in fact he did several. The actor then continued with a strange, rambling speech.
8. Sacha Baron Cohen dumps ashes on Ryan Seacrest
In 2012, Sacha Baron Cohen turned up at the Academy Awards dressed as his movie character The Dictator and dumped gray ashes on everyones favorite red carpet host Ryan Seacrest. The American Idol host handled the ambush like a pro and quickly returned to his red carpet interviews.
7. Rob Lowe sings and dances with Snow White
The 1989 Oscars opener featured a beyond awkward musical number, during which Rob Lowe sung and danced alongside Eileen Bowman dressed as Snow White. The ensemble is said to have destroyed the career of its producer, Allan Carr.
6. Michael Moore gets political 2003

Hanks hasn’t done a decent movie since “Bachelor Party.”
What? No mention of when David Letterman hosted and totally made an ass out of himself?
How is it any different than what that soulless bastard does every night on his talk show ?
RE: No mention of when David Letterman hosted and totally made an ass out of himself?
“Uma” “Oprah”, “Uma” “Oprah” ( REPEAT SEVERAL TIMES ).
NOT FUNNY!!
Hey, Jim...never seen ‘Titanic’ OR ‘Avatar’, and I’m damn sure I never will.
Avatar, aka Pocahontas in Space.
I thought the worst was when Halle Berry won for best actress and praised the groundbreaking moment. The membership erupted in self congratulation while not realizing it was themselves who had never nominated or awarded an oscar to a black female for best actress. Normal Americans never had a vote, only the membership of the academy had that privilege.
Wha......I thought worst moment was Ellen Page losing Best Actress to Marion Cotillard in 2007? Shocked, I must say! /mostly sarc
Interesting list. However, for me, the most cringe-worthy Oscar moment was watching the arrogant, commie-loving assh*le Coen brothers and that she-clown Frances McDormand, sitting on their hands when Elia Kazan was given a Lifetime Achievement award. Elia Kazan!! Could anyone in the audience that night compare their body of work to him?
john wayne accepting his award for TRUE GRIT is great. and david niven was always a class act. not only have i not watched the oscars for 20 years i usually have never seen any of the films and don’t even recognize the titles for half of them.
People watch the Oscars these days?
Yeah, his "Uma...Oprah. Oprah...Uma" was pretty stupid. I'd also add Whoopi Goldberg hosting the Oscars as one the its awful moments. After Bob Hope stopped hosting them, the only other host I've ever enjoyed is Billy Crystal.
Somebody else mentioned Johnny Carson. Forgot about him as hosting the Oscars. He did a decent job too, along with Crystal. You can tell Hollywood has gone down the tubes since they haven’t been able to find the likes of Hope or Carson to regularly host.
RE: People watch the Oscars these days?
Last year, nearly 40 million Americans watched the Oscars. That’s one out of every eight Americans. More than those who bothered to listen to Obama’s SOTU speech.
And that doesn’t include the telecast worldwide, which is close to a BILLION ( with a ‘B’).

Well, at least in America, that’s 7 million people less than those on food stamps. :)
Just wait until Denzel Washington wins this Sunday.
You’re right. I just watched that on youtube. How pathetic. That building was just dripping with self-importance, which it seems to every year, and why I never watch the sad spectacle. So many fake tears and thanks to meaningless people, when all they really want to do is yell, “I am so awesome!”
I remember that year. She won and her boyfriend stood up trying to get a standing ovation. That was the last year I was serious about watching the Academy Awards.
Why awful? It was silly, but not terrible, and not really so very strange for Hollywood.
Just another odd moment out of many off-kilter Oscar moments.
Jack Palance probably wasn't really the Best Supporting Actor that year either, but let that go, too.
Cameron's "King of the World" speech?
Silly, but ... well just silly and nothing more.
Hillary Swank forgetting to thank her husband (or wife or whatever) ... that was terrible.
