I was surprised to read that Asians have a higher percent of Neanderthal DNA than do Europeans.

Indeed. Essentially the only ones with 3.5 - 4% Neanderthal genes are Asians. Euros average 2.5% or so, and max out at 3.2% or thereabouts.
