In defense of auto-tipping for groups -- it's been my experience that there are always some people in any group that will opt to be a "free-rider" regarding the tips.

I generally tip well (unless the service is really sub-par). When I'm in a group that includes non tippers, and where there's a combined bill -- I (and other tippers) wind up looking like pikers, because the non-tippers really bring the average tip down.

This is just an example of the well-known phenomenon of "diminished personal responsibility" common to members of all groups. If you think: "No one will notice if I don't tip, because there are so many people in this group", then you're less likely to tip. Well, we tippers notice -- and the wait staff certainly notices.

we tip well...by that I mean at least 15% but most often closer to 20%....but I hate auto tip and it insults me....

I work hard for my pay and no one gives me a "tip"....

at Olive Garden, we had a group of 8 or more so they automatically added the tip....then they had the audacity to give us a receipt for our credit card with an additional line for "extra" tip....balonnney....
