The best example I can think of is when Gretchen Mol told the story of how the Commodore raped her when she was 12 or 13 years old. Then two episodes later we were all like, “Oh Jimmy, NOOOOOOOO! That’s your mom!!!”

Ugh ... I'm still traumatized by that :-|

Sometimes they'll have a great scene with a character, but there's no follow-up. Like when Chalkie was drunk at the dinner table. "Is that a duck?" He was an outcast in his own house. I wanted to see more of that, but afterwards Chalkie's mostly seen with the strike and getting revenge on the Klan.
