It has been suggested that very long ping lists be divided into sections, and each section pinged on its own.

While I agree with the probable cause and the intent, I think that's dumb if you're trying to eliminate duplicate pings, because it means multiple pings anyway. Only more work. :^)

It does indeed mean more work, and the sending out of additional pings, but to a different list of people.

The only way to know for sure is to try it. I'd recommend the Official Friday Silliness Thread ping, which seems to exhibit the phenomenon.
